Fishing Report.....................................
07/02/10 Eric Burnley
DELAWARE BAY - The opening day of tog fishing was hampered by high winds that kicked up
rough seas and made anchoring on structure difficult. One captain I spoke with on Thursday morning said
half of his party was sick before they got to their fishing location so he had to return to the dock. I did see a
catch of three or four tog per angler made by another captain before he came in early.
The summer rockfish season also kicked in Thursday and I know of one angler who had his limit out of the
Lewes and Rehoboth Canal. This two month season was productive for most anglers (not me) last year and I
expect a repeat of that success. Some of the best bay rockfishing will be in the mouths of tidal creeks and
rivers, the area around Ship John and in the Lewes and Rehoboth Canal. Cut bunker fished on the bottom or
live eels drifted over structure are two good baits.
Rockfish were caught at the Outer Wall in the evening and early morning on plugs, jigs and eels. Just
remember that any rock over 26 inches must be released. Another thing to keep in mind is New Jersey does
not have a summer rockfish season and their size limit remains at 28 inches. If you are checked by New
Jersey officials and found to have 20- to 26-inch rock on board they will give you a ticket.
Flounder fishing seems to be improving in the bay, We had reports of flounder as far north as the 6L Buoy
and Reef Site 2. The reef sites seem to hold the most fish and the most fishermen. Flounder have also been
taken at the Anchorage between the F and G buoys. The inshore waters between Broadkill Beach and Cape
Henlopen have seen some keeper flounder as well.
In the upper bay, small rock should be available from Woodland Beach and Augustine. White perch and
catfish will help fill the cooler.
INSHORE OCEAN - The Old Grounds, Reef Sites 10 and 11 and inshore wrecks have all seen
decent action on flounder and sea bass. The problem is size; most of the fish do not meet the minimum
length requirement and must be returned to the water.
The inshore lumps have seen sharks, bluefish and false albacore. As the water temperature increases we
should see yellowfin tuna and dolphin join the mix.
.
OFFSHORE OCEAN Tuna, dolphin, marlin and wahoo were caught from the canyons last
weekend with a lot of the action centered around the Poorman’s. As any experienced offshore fisherman will
tell you, what happened last weekend or even yesterday is no indication of what will happen this weekend.
The weather does look fishable and with the holiday I expect to see plenty of boats covering the water from
the Norfolk to the Wilmington.
