What Is a Vessel Safety Check?
A Vessel Safety Check (VSC) is a free, no-penalty courtesy examination conducted by certified members of the Coast Guard Auxiliary. During the inspection, examiners review important safety items and equipment to help ensure your boat meets both federal and state recreational boating requirements.
The inspection may include checks for:
- Life jackets and wearable flotation devices
- Fire extinguishers
- Navigation lights
- Sound-producing devices
- Registration and documentation
- Ventilation and fuel systems
- Visual distress signals
- Overall vessel condition and safety preparedness
Boaters whose vessels meet the current safety requirements will receive a 2026 Vessel Safety Check decal to display proudly on their boat.
Why Schedule a Safety Check?
A Vessel Safety Check is one of the easiest ways to prepare for a safe and enjoyable boating season. Even experienced captains can benefit from having a second set of trained eyes review equipment and safety readiness before heading offshore or into the bay.
The event is also a great opportunity for:
- New boat owners
- Families preparing for summer boating
- Anglers getting ready for fishing season
- Seasonal boaters launching for the first time this year
Best of all, there are no citations or penalties associated with the inspection. The goal is education, awareness, and safer waterways for everyone.
Appointments Encouraged
Appointments are strongly encouraged to help reduce wait times and ensure each vessel receives a thorough inspection. Call 302-422-2040 to schedule.
